In Shakespeares Garden

In Shakespeare's Garden

May 30, 2017, 6:00pm - May 30, 2017, 8:00pm

LaSalle Public Library
305 Marquette St
La Salle, IL  61301 Map

Join us at the LaSalle Public Library when hosts Laura Mueller presents, her unusual and fascinating program, “In Shakespeare's Garden.” Garden imagery populates Shakespeare's work. In this illustrated presentation, Ms. Mueller will explore the plants, so familiar to Shakespeare, and will present a look at common gardens of the period featuring both flowers and plants that reflect the times and places in which selected scenes from his plays are set.

Shakespeare's love of plant legend and lore and his
interest in natural settings speak to his origins and place him within a particular historical context. Changes in the culture during Shakespeare’s lifetime influenced the choices of garden plants, just as the need for privacy, secrecy, and entertainment at
Elizabeth’s court established garden design.

Artist and art historian, Laura Mueller worked for the Art Institute’s Department of Museum Education, from 1987 to 2017, and currently offers lectures on art. She has taught literature and art history at area colleges, and private drawing and painting classes. Laura has been an Art Institute study leader on trips to Europe, including Adriatic Odyssey, Holland and Belgium, the prehistoric caves of in France. She holds a B.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, an M.A. from the University of Chicago in Comparative Literature, and has studied art with NYU in Venice, Italy.

This program is free and open to the public. It is made possible through funding from the Alwin C. Carus Trust. The Library is located at 305 Marquette, LaSalle, Illinois, and is ADA compliant and welcoming. For more information, please call the Library at 815-223-2341.

Dinner Lecture: Coal, Shale & Ironstone: Geology of Mazon Creek

Dinner Lecture: Coal, Shale & Ironstone: Geology of Mazon Creek

October 5, 2017, 5:30pm - October 5, 2017, 8:00pm

Lock 16 Cafe and Center
754 1st St
La Salle, IL  61301 Map

Located in northeastern Illinois, Mazon Creek, is an incredible fossil array of associated Upper Carboniferous plants and animals. Considered to be among the world’s great Lagerstätten, or Mother Lodes, this site’s numerous and delicately preserved soft-bodied animals are rarely seen in the fossil record, and many species have been singularly described from the deposit. Magnificent plant impressions, many of them ferns (to some, the quintessential
prehistoric floral form) are beautifully preserved in iron carbonate nodules. The importance of Mazon Creek to understanding the story of our planet, and specifically the Pennsylvanian Period, was realized by science only in the mid-nineteenth century. Considerable research has been done since then, perhaps providing the most
omprehensive picture of life in the Late Paleozoic. Come hear the narrative of its geologic and biological history: how it came to be and what lived there.

Speaker Andrew Young is a visual artist who studied biology, art history, and studio art at the University of California, Berkeley. His interest in science furthered his affinity for natural history which, combined with philosophy and art, eventually brought him to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he earned an M.F.A. in painting and drawing. Young’s work has been featured in numerous national and international exhibitions, often with accompanying workshops.

Just the lecture $7. Dinner and Lecture $29 for Non-Members, $24 for Members. Reservations are required. For more information or to reserve, please call (815) 220-1848 ext. 1838.

Another first-timer to our stage - An acoustic band born in the land of tech innovation, Front Country was never going to be accepted as an authentic American roots band out of the gate. Cutting their teeth in progressive bluegrass jams in San Francisco's Mission District and rehearsing in the East Bay, they learned to play roots music their own way, with the tools they had on hand. A mandolinist with a degree in composition and classical guitar. A guitarist trained in rock and world music. A bassist equally versed in jazz and bluegrass. A violinist with technique that could seamlessly hop between honky tonk and electropop. A female lead singer with grit and soul that was also a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter.

Dinner Lecture: Trail Marker Trees

Dinner Lecture: Trail Marker Trees

November 30, 2017, 5:30pm - November 30, 2017, 8:00pm

Lock 16 Cafe and Center
754 1st St
La Salle, IL  61301 Map

The Trail Marker Trees as well as the Marker Trees in general, were part of an extensive land and water navigation system in our country that already was in place long before the arrival of the first European settlers. While the Native American's had a widespread trail system in place, the Trail Marker Trees served as exit signs off of these land and water routes bringing them to areas of specific interest and then directing them back to the main route, much like the exit signs off of our major interstates today. Remembering that before the concept of drainage ditches and canals, to relieve flooding, much of the country was flooded for long periods. In the spring and the summer paths near rivers and creeks would not be visible when water overflowed the banks. Trail Trees high on the banks could still be spotted telling the travelers where to exit the waterway to reach their destination.

The state of Illinois is where much of the earliest research and documentation of Trail Marker Trees began, as early as 1836. Some of the groups involved with the first studies of the Trail Marker Trees are the Chicago Academy of Sciences, Daughters of the American Revolution, Wisconsin Archeologist, Winnetka Historical Society, and the Wilmette Historical Society. Along with these groups, many individual historians, arborists, landscape architects, and Trail Marker Tree enthusiasts conducted early research regarding the Trail Marker Trees.

Just the lecture $7. Dinner and Lecture $29 for Non-Members, $24 for Members. Reservations are required. For more information or to reserve, please call (815) 220-1848 ext. 1838
